Sengun's injury could cost the Houston Rockets a chance to make the postseason. They sit 11th in the Western Conference, one spot outside the play-in tournament. They trail the 10th-seeded Golden State Warriors by five games.
HC Ime Udoka was acquired to expedite the Rockets' rebuilding process. He likely aimed to make it into the playoffs this season so his team could earn some invaluable postseason experience.
Still, the Rockets will likely be relieved their star talent has avoided a major injury. Sengun has been among the best young players in the NBA this season. He will likely sign a max contract during the summer.
"When you look into the offseason, he will be eligible for a five-year $225M max contract," Charania said. "Alperen Sengun has put himself in that category of being a max player."Houston could still make the postseason. However, it would require a herculean surge from Udoka's team. Losing their most talented player during the stretch run is a major blow.
Still, there have been significant signs of improvement this season, and that will ensure Houston has a platform to build on during the summer. Tough break or not, they're a franchise heading in the right direction.
